Genre Writing

Genre Writing

At the moment in MLH ( my class ) are starting a  Genre Writing challenge,  until the end of the year. Every week we try complete  two pieces of writing, identifying what genre it uses.  Here is my piece of writing for this week, I have completed.

Genre Writing - persuade

A day at the beach I definitely think is NOT as good as a day in the mountains! Would you rather be at the beach or the mountains? Well I know that I would rather spend a day in the snowy mountains. If you go to the mountains you will be able to be in the fresh air, looking at the view while snowboarding.

Firstly I totally believe that people should spend a day at the mountains because you get to see the views and doesn’t most people like to see the views of the ecoed semicracly covered in frosty  snow. Being on a mountain in the fresh air would be healthy for your well being, when your in the outdoors.

Also if you spend a day in the mountains you will maybe be able to learn how to be able to snowboard and/or skee down the snowy mountains. Snowboarding and skiing are adventurous activities. Being on the mountains will teach you new things.

Lastly I believe that if you visit the mountains you will be able to see snow.. If you lucky enough you might also see snowflakes and that would be cool.

After all of those reasons I hope that you also believe that you should go to the mountains for a day rather that a day at the beach, because you get to see a good view of all of the snowy mountains, you get to see snow and manye snowflakes and last of all you might learn how to snowboard and/or skee. If you visit the mountains you will get to see new things, visit new places, and go on new experiences.

Kapa Haka Performance

 Kapa Haka Performance

Wind forcely swang my hair back and forth as I walked through the school gates. Today I felt ready to shine at the school kapa haka performance. Rushing to the hall, I carried my bodics to get changed into. After I was changed I ran with pride to my teacher to get my moko stamped onto my face. My teacher stamped an inky moko stamp on my chin. Pushing with might I pushed against the teacher, so the moko stamp showed a clear, inky moko on my chin. I had to leave it to dry before I could touch it, otherwise the moko would smudge and that wouldn't of been good. Feathers got placed in my hair through the hair tie.

Following the leader I walked outside to the hall. Because of alert levels, at alert level 2, unfortunately parents could not come and watch our performance, lucky Matua canaan came in to our kura to video our performance. I tried to line up in the lines as straight as I possibly could. I felt proud of my self.

Koka B said" cameras on" and the kaia yelled the first command. Everyone's actions were symmetrical.  Voices bounced of and on the walls making our performance loudly strong. Our first song we sang was utaina. When I came to the second round of utaina the boys did the utaina haka and the girls sang utaina. The girls and boys competed  to try and make their haka louder than the girls singing. To be honest I think that the girls and boys were just as loud as each other.

We than sang  Ka waiata followed by the poi, kapana, haka, toiea. Then the performance was over. I was happy that our rupu had done an awesome job. My favourite song was toiea, when the voices echoed of the hall walls.  We all did our part to make this an awesome kapa haka performance.

Green Team Performance

 Green Team Performance

Suddenly ... out of know where, a dressed up (person as a crayfish) crayfish walked bounced onto the stage. She was called Nanny Kora ( nanny crayfish ). MLH was at Ilminster intermediate watching a play. Nanny Koda started  by telling a story to her moko ( little kora/ crayfish ) about humans dropping rubbish and that the rubbish that some people have dropped in a skate bowl will float out to our oceans. It made me think out of the box and made me think deep about how much rubbish we would get in our oceans if everyone drops their rubbish.

My mind thought hard and deeper as the play got more and more interesting. Through out the play the people who dumped their rubbish in the skate bowl were starting to learning a lesson, that everyone should not dump their litter otherwise our oceans will be filled with  rubbish.  Have you ever herd the saying : there is more rubbish in our oceans than stars in our galaxy? That saying relates to the dumping rubbish! Back to the performance, after a little while aliens turned up and they were turning the skate bowl into a rubbish dump, by throwing all of their things that have already been used into the skate bowl. The skaters were not happy about that  and they tried to tell the aliens to pick up the rubbish they had dumped I the skate bowl.  I didn't  think that they should be telling the aliens to pick up their ( the aliens ) rubbish when the skaters have dumped their ( the skaters ) lillie rappers into the skate bowl.

The aliens did not listen, so the skaters took them to Nanny Kora. Immediately they listened and obeyed Nanny koda, so they picked up their rubbish. The aliens didn't think that it was a fair situation, so the skaters went  and  picked up their lollies rubbish they had dumped earlier on, to make it fair.  After everyone had picked up their rubbish the ocean was clean again and the sea creatures were finally living in a clean place.

I think that after watching that Geen Team Performance, that we should all do our part to keep our oceans clean, for us and the sea creatures! Let's all try use the three r's, reuse, reduce, and recycle, all of the time! I felt that we should all make a positive change to our environment.

Here are some photos from the green team play.

Workshop EL3 Reading

Workshop EL3 Reading

Today I participated in my el3 reading workshop.

Our teacher handed  us a piece of paper of a grid. Also our teacher gave us some school journals. As a group we had to communicate and try find out what type of writing text that the author has used in the piece of writing. I highlighted the answer I thought. There were five options; Narrative, Report, Poem, Play and Procedure.

Also we had to highlight what we thought was the author's purpose to write this piece of writing. The options were; To inform, persuade and entertain. Some pieces of writing was very hard to figure out. On the right of the author's purpose, we had to fill in why this makes the piece of writing a... ( Poem, Narrative, Report, Play, or Procedure).

Here is a photo of the grid I filled in.

Have you written a story before? What was your purpose? Were you trying to Inform, Entertain, or Persuade people?

That was what we were learning today in our el3 reading workshop, How to find out what type of text the author has used and what was the authors purpose and what the author needs to have used to make it that type of writing.

Finding Out What Is the Type Of Writing Feature The Author Has Used.

Finding Out What Is the Type Of Writing Feature  The Author Has Used.

Today in my reading workshop we had a challenge to complete. My teacher handed a book in my hand, I was told to find out what writing feature the author has used in the piece of writing. I was in a group of three. We all held the same book trying to find out what writing feature the author had used.

Soon enough we found out what the writing feature was, it was: poetry, that the author has used.  The author's name is called Alan Bagnall. There was a maroon coloured title, that read: Practising For My Film Audition.

I Know that this is a type of poetry because is has: langue features, creativity, Rhyming words, it has short lines of writing. This piece of poetry has one full stop in the text.

                                                                        The End

With this type of text there were, rhyming words, a title, alliteration, creative.

Division Maths

                                                                         Division Maths

What is division math. Division maths is a type of maths when you divide a number in to parts. There are different ways you can find out a division question. In some division questions you have to have remainder because they number is not perfectly even. Here is an example of a division question that needs remainers in the awnser.

Try answer the question.

Here is my answer to the question ( 4 divided by 99).

Did you get the same answer?

Maths WorkShop

                                                        Maths WorkShop

Today in my maths workshop we were learning to find patterns in a maths question. I was told to write a a grid that showed six squares. I rote numbers one to five in the top boxes.  Underneath the high boxes we had to find out the answer of the first pattern. We were using ice bloc sticks but the question on the big screen made the question using matchsticks. The question was: If you had  a triangle and connected 11 more tryangles to the single triangle how many matchsticks would you have to use. Instead of connecting 12 triangles together and finding the answer that way, we were told to find patterns through the numbers of the grid shown in out maths book.

At first I found the questions a bit hard to understand, but after a few questions I had got the rhythm of the patten mastered. Our teacher kept changing the shape to make our minds figger the question and multiply the shape of the number.  I had to keep trying and never give up. When I tried to find patterns, I would use my multiplicative thinking to find the easy ways of answering the question.

Here is my work I did in my maths book today in the workshop.

High Modality Learning/ SPaG workshop

                        High Modality Learning/ SPaG workshop

                                    What are high modality words?

High modality words are strong words that usually stait your opinion strongly. High modality words are normally found in speeches or other ways, when people try to convince and persuade you to agree with there opinion. High modality words are strong words that are used to convince people in positive and negative ways. They are also words that make you seem certain on your opinion.

Here are some examples of high modality words, that I have made.

First Day Back To School

                                               First Day Back To School
First day back to school. I woke up nice and early in the morning. It was raining cats and dogs. I got ready for school and pack my bag. My family and I swung our bags onto our back and stornched into the car, ready for a big day of learning. I felt nervous and excited to start the first day of term 4. Soon we arrived at school.
The clouds were crying as I walked through the school gates. My bag weighed a ton when in shrugged on my back shoulders.  As everybody ran into school, it sounded  like a pack of elephants charging  at you.

Dinning the loud school bell rang loudly. That was the sign that told us it was 9.00 ( class time ). All of MLH ( my class came ) came storming through the open doors of the classroom. I ran to the hall, trying to cover my face from the rain. I had to go to the hall to get ready for the welcoming of the new students joining our kura.  When we welcome people to our kura we sing waiatas and the teachers speak.

I was very excited. Loud singing danced around the room springing and echoing back and ford. Soon it was time to leave the hall. The muddy grass splatted out the sides of your foot when footprints stomped down. Me and my friends ran through the spitting rain.

Workshops started and we were soon back to usual routine. I started my weekly priorities confidently. The school day had started.

Action Day

                                                                     Action Day

I woke up at dawn, looking ford to an action day at school. MLH ( my class ) were going to go on a big walk up farmland and Otukakara hill, to try and find the start of Hamanatua Awa. Hamanatua is the Awa is in Wainui Beach School Pepeha.

Once our class room was lined up  on the deck we started our journey. It was a gloomy and cloudy day, perfect for a day of walking. Once we had got to the end of Hamanatua Awa,  we followed the underground path to the hill.

It took a while to arrive at the hill/ farm land. There was a little river we had to cross. I liked watching everyone cross the river. There were some funny moments when people crossed unsuccessfully.  I leaped over. It was a bit nerve racking. Eventually the whole of MLH got across the bridge. Wet or dry we all got across.

We soon made it to a nice shady tree, that's where we sat and ate morning tea. Then we were of walking past all of the Cows, Ducks, and Sheep all with their babies. We all had to be quiet when we walked past all of the baby animals just so we don't scar them.

It came to the time that we had to turn around and go back. But we still got to see when Hamanatua  Awa was very small. I liked walking with my friends. I liked the freezing breeze that flowingly blew by hair back and ford.

Once we got back to school we got changed because we were all very muddy. After that we were aloud to play. I decided to play under knee tag.

Here is some photos about our walk.

Reading Workshop

                                                        Reading Workshop

Every week I participate in my reading workshop. This week, in our workshop we had to film a flipgrid of our self reading the retell that we all wrote last week. I was a bit nervous that I would forget my sentence I was meant to read. But I got ready to do my first attempt.

Our goal was to look at the camera while reading, just so it looked like we were reading it off by heart. It makes it look better. It also makes people interested at listening to the video because you are giving them eye contact.

I decided to take my first attempt. To make it look like I was reading the retell of by heart, I would get a sentence in my head then say it.  After I said one sentence I would pause the flipgrid, so then I could have time to memorise the next sentence. It took a little while but I got through it. I took a couple of attempts to get the video that I was happy with.

I liked doing my attempts. Once I had finished my final attempt and I was happy with it. I posted my video / flipgrid. Then I linked it to the task sheet, so there is evidence that I  did a flipgrid and so the teachers have easy access to the video when editing and checking people's work.

That was one of the activities that we did this week for our writing workshop. Then we had to rap up a little bit of information about the retell. I liked my reading workshop this week.  I learnt heaps and found out lots of new information I the reading workshop this week.

WorkShop Retell

WorkShop Retell

Early Morning, Jacob was helping his mother stack firewood. Au Sum came along selling Bok Choy, alone, in the small chinese village." I don't know how you can eat that 'muck'", said Mrs Bishop. When Au Sum travelled by selling his Bok Choy. Mrs Bishop was a lady who live next door to Jacob and his family, they lived in the middle of the little chinese village. Mrs Bishop didn't know how to control her words. She thought it was bad to be different to others.

Au Sum could here Jacob still sneering and had a sudden urge to go fishing and to leave the firewood. He wanted to get away from Mrs Bishop.

It only took one moment for the river to steal him. While Jacob sunk down the river Au Sum had got hold of Jacob's arm hardly. Au Sum tried hard to save his life. Soon enough Au sum had been able to pull Jacob onto the soft grass, on his back. Au Sum took Jacob to the hut. The next thing Jacob knew, that he was in a darkened hut, next to the hot steaming fire.

Jacob's mum soon entered the door of the hut. Au Sum greeted her, and told her all about what had happened. " Are you okay Jacob"? Said The Mother. " I'm okay Mother", siad Jacob in a soft voice. Jacob took his Mothers hand and the pair walked out of the dark hut. As they walked along the gravel path, the two of the came across Mrs Bishop. Mrs Bishop said" a lot of bad things about Au Sum, but Jacob and his mother just said good things. Mrs Bishop could never understand how people are different.

P.E At School

                                      P.E At School

At the moment, my class been participating in P.E every single day. If you didn't know P.E is a short  version for saying physical education. P.E is very good for your mental health. P.E is one of those things that there is NO restrictions on when you have to stop, e.g: you can do as much P.E as you ever could imagine, as long as your body doesn't explode with pain.

P.E can be all sorts of things, e.g: Sport, Running, Games, just anything that is out doors and that is physical for your body. I love being in the outdoor fresh air, especially with my friends & Family.

Normally after you participate in anything physical things, you need to stretch your mussels afterwards. Just so they don't get to painful for the next day / week. If your mussels get tight, that means you need to give them a good stretch. That will make you be able to do P.E the next day without any of your body hurting.

I reckon you should start / do P.E everyday or week. Or whenever you have any free time. Being out in the fresh air makes you feel fresh and good ready for your day ahead.

P.E In Lockdown 2.0

                                          P.E In Lockdown 2.0

At the moment most of New Zealand is in level three lockdown. That means you can go out of your house for P.E and others reasons. At the moment my family and I have been getting up to a lot of P.E and sport.

Yesterday we travelled to wheat stone road. As I was biking up the big hills it felt like our legs were burning. I love to be in the fresh air. Finally we got to the top of one of the big hills. I stared down at the bottom of the hill. I could see a lot.

When we made it to the top, There was such a good view of the whole of gisborne.

Soon enough it was time to go down all of the hills. That is my favourite part. I zoomed behind my brother still staying on track. My brakes squeaked as I pulled them tight when I flew down the hills. I went down one last hill then I was at the bottom. I was very proud.

Online Workshops/Teacher Groups

Online workshops - Teacher Groups

As you know that at the moment the whole of New Zealand is in alert level 4 lockdown. That means no- one can go to school or work, only if you are an essential worker like police, nerce, doctor, firefighter & Ambulance person... and more. Most people still do school but just online with their teachers. I like lockdown so far because we get heaps of time to do our work that needs to be done.

I prefer to do my work at school with my friends but thats okay that we are at home because it's just like a bigger holiday with school work. At Least we can be in our bubble with my lovely family.

Everyday I go onto my class sight and go to the workshop on my level. It is very different online compared to every day school life, but thats okay. I still enjoy the workshops / teacher groups.

Lockdown learning

 Lockdown learning

As you know at the moment the whole country New Zealand is in level four lockdown. That means that we can't go to school, so we do everything online just like a normal day, but your just at home instead of school.  Every day I have to do Two google meets for all of my writing, math, reading & Strand groups. I find lockdown very interesting.

It's very different in google meets -to- normal life. We all need to stay in our own bubble to stay safe and to make sure that the virus doesn't spread and make more and more people unwell. New Zealand's Prime Minister = Jacinda Ardern has made lots of good questions to help keep New Zealand safe!

Some of my google meets have heaps of people in them and some have hardly any! I've liked lockdown because I get a nice break!

Thick & Thin Questions

                                             Thick & Thin Questions

What are thick and thin questions?:  Thick and thin question are different types of questions.  Thick questions makes people think more and different ideas that match to the topic.  Also a thick question means that there may be different thoughts and answers to that question.  Usually when somebody says that's a thick or thin question they normally a wanting an answer.

Most people use thick and thin sentences every day in daily life.  I love when somebody asks me a thick and interesting question.  Thick and thin questions are a bit different in different ways to  explain and use.

Try using thick and thin questions in everyday life. There are different ways to use a thick or thin questions. Not all thick questions stat with; is it possible.

This is a thick question:  Is it possible to come invisible? Using that one question , heaps of people will have different opinions/thoughts. What do you think about: Is it possible to come invisible? My opinion is that you can camouflage and hide in or under something, you could hide in the sea, behind a dark cloak, where white clothes in the snow.   There is heaps of different ways to hide, but you never actually come/ go invisible.

Have you ever answered a thick question?

Story-Starters

Story-Starters

Every week  Moana Learning Hub get to do story starters. They  are very interesting. A story starter is a sentence we need to use at the start of our quick write. I have found the sentence starters very interesting & fun.

There are success criterias that we have to follow to make sure our stories are high quality, have lots of detail, have interesting & describing words, also to make sure that we include similes, nouns, adjectivesidioms, verbs, adverbs.

I find the sentence starters very helpful to get my stories started.  Every week Moana Learning Hub need to have finished two story starters. Everytime I start a story starter I use a different sentence to start each piece of descriptive writing.

Normally we write for twenty-five mininuts then edit for five - ten mininuts to make sure that we have got enough words and sentences in our story starters. Once we have finished both story starters we need to edit and check to make sure that we have followed the Success criteria correctly.

Here are some slides that show what we use to start our stories and which sentence starters are used every week.

Olympic Learning

                                   Olympic Learning

                                                  What have we been learning

At  the moment MLH has been learning about the olympics. I have found the challenge quite hard but i've been learning so much new information. The Olympic booklet is a booklet that has heaps of little activities for us to complete. I have loved learning about the Olympics, because I get to find out so much information that I don't know yet.

                                                      whats in the booklet

In one part of the booklet there are 2 mascots from tokyo ( to show us what a mascot really looks like ), so then we need to design an  Aotearoa mascot, I needed to do heaps of drafts.  It took a long time to do one page of the booklet, because on one page there is so many different activities that we all need to complete.  There also are lots of questions that are very interesting, all about the athletes, sports, results, countries,  age,  opening ceremony, & techniek.

                                                  Info about the olympics

Did you know that the 2020 olympics were in Tokyo? In the Tokyo 2020 olympics there were 33 different sports but different competitions with'n just one sport. There were 11,090 athletes that competed in the Tokyo 2020 olympics. The olympics go on every four years.

                                                      What's Math Whizz?

Every week my whole class does maths whizz for 40-60 mininuts through out the whole week. Maths Whizz is a maths web - sight that helps your improve in your maths in all earahs. I find Maths Whizz AWESOME for my learning and helps me improve! Every week, every single person in my class would have had to got at least four credits/gems by the end of the week. In Maths Whizz there are lots of different levels like... Rookie, Apprentice, Pro, Master & Supper - Star.  As you improve you will start to move up levels. I find that Maths Whizz helps me improve in all areas of math!

                                                   What Maths Whizz Looks Like?

As you finish levels you will move down the line then slowly collect gems/credits.

I really think that you should try have a go on Maths Whizz,  It helps you improve in all areas in your math curriculum.

Matariki Inquiry

 Matariki Inquiry

Like most people who every year there is a celebration called: Matariki. It's a new year celebration especially for maori. Matariki are stars that are very bright. At the moment there are nine stars but there could be more. In different places they have different dates, names, and is different how they celebrate.

                                                              Matariki sisters names

Our inquiry topic was to choose out of : Drama, Dance, Poetry & Music.
I was in a group of 8 and we all decided to create a dance.

After lots of practise we finally had our dance mastered!
So then we filmed our master dance because some of our group will be away when
we all the projects will be shown.

I'm very excited to show 60 people in our class the video of our dance about Matariki.

Times Tables, Take Away, Pluss, MATHS

At the moment I have been leaning how to find the most efficient way to sole math questions using the stridgie called : algorithm.
For me algorithm was what I found the most efficient way to help me solve hard maths questions.
It might be hard to use the algorithm strategy for some people.  Sometimes I didn't find algorithm easy, so I practised hard and improved.  Here are some examples.

Finding Information With In and Between Texts.

Finding Information With In and Between Texts.

In my maths group in MLH we were learning how to find information with in and between texts.  things in my work shop. IN buddy's we had to read two stories and figure out what was the same about those two stories and what was different. Our teacher showed our  group an egsarpile so we all understood the topic.  Me and mu buddy Kyla-rose we worked together and compared two stories together and completed 5he task. This is some slides that I made to show how I have found Information with in a between texts. I loved learning.

Learning how to find new strategies to help us solve problems faster.

Learning how to find new strategies to help us solve problems faster.

In maths group we were learning about trying to find the quickest was to solve problems that works for us and what we understand incredibly fast. It took me a while to find out  that algorithm was  what I was best at for bigger questions. So that night I went home and practised lots until I had got the stradgie very well.  There are patterns in maths and everyone needs to look for them to make their maths easier and so they can solve the problems faster. This is a video that I made that might be able to help you understand algorithm easier?

Learning How To Create New Types Of Pieces Of Art We May Not Have Done Before

Learning How To Create New Types Of  Pieces Of Art We May Not Have Done Before

" Morning class " our teacher said as she leaped through the see through wide open door. " Today we are going to be going art up to lunch time" our teach explained, the class was so excited. She read the roll out then started to explain what type of art we were going to try to create today.  First she put on a video about the artist that we were going to try make something similar to hers. I found the video very interesting and I found out lost of interesting about the artists life.

Suddenly I had a piece of paper in my hand and was ready to start my piece of art work. Starting off by drawing the nose and eyes. It was harder then I thought! Slowly my teacher would play the video step by step as we created out pieces of amazing art work.

Finally I had done my nose and eyes done but it took a while till it was happy with my work I had done. Then we did the next step. We didn't add to much detail to our art work yet because we needed to pastel after we had put vivid over the pencil. Time pasted by very fast and I was all ready past my vivid stage. Pastels were very bright so I decided to blend some colours together and smuge together with my skin on my fingers.

Once I had finished my mahi I needed to tidy up my working space so I could head off to lunch. I was very proud with my work, and I especially liked how I added golden balls on top of the dark green. All my colours looked very bright. Finally we got to go out to lunch.

Beach Clean Up

                                                                          Beach Clean Up

Yesterday at Wainui Beach School we travelled to the beach in groups of three, each group got a bucket to hold  their rubbish in. We were going to have a competition that what ever group collects the most rubbish would get a prize. It was a nice walk along the beach as we were hunting for rubbish. We walked all the way down to Wainui Surf Club. In my group there was Lila, Aria and me. We all worked very hard. On the way back we found heaps of cans and cups.

Walking along the cracked concrete finding rubbish was quite fun. Finally we arrived at school and counted our rubbish. We had to make down what we found.  Our Group got 30 pieces of rubbish and six big hand fulles as well. It was a long morning collecting all that rubbish. I was very surprised that we found heaps. It was so sad finding all that rubbish because that means that there is heaps of rubbish everywhere.

After we got back we found out the winner and nearly the group that came second but they said in there paper that they found five tires but know one found five tires on our trip. I was very hungry when I got back to school because we didn't take our lunch box's on our trip.

Screencastify

 Screencastify

At the moment Moana Learning Hub has been learning about Screencastify. Today, we logged on and tried to read a story from Epic while the Screencastify was filming. It was my first time on screencastify, so at first I didn't really know what it was.  Screencastify is what we use to expand our learning. Sometimes the teachers will say to us that we need to film ourselves reading our work, then send it to our teachers  so they know what we have completed. This is my video that I made, I'm reading a few pages of a story because it was my first time on Screencastify today.

Gymnastics Festival Practices

 Gymnastics Festival Practices

At the moment MLH  we are practicing gymnastics for the festival. Every year there is a gymnastics festival for most schools in Gisborne.   It's optional if you would like to participate in this festival. I am going to participate in the gymnastics festival this year. Sadly last year our school did not do the gymnastics festival because it got cancelled by COVID-19.

There are grades that you can enter in for different levels, like D grade, C grade, B grade, A advanced and A grade. The difference between A advanced and A grade is that A grade make up their own floor routine but in A advanced is when they give you a routine but you do all the other A things.

I'm in B grade,  so that means they give me routines and I need to practise lots until I get it off by heart. In 2019 I participated in C grade. Every Monday and Friday lunch time we practice our routines. I love Gymnastics!   If you're a girl and you're in B grade you need to do vault, floor and beam.  If you're a boy and your in B grade you need to do bar, vault and floor. My favourite thing in gymnastics is bar so I'm a bit disappointed that girls don't do bar.

In the gymnastics festival there are the individual grades and then there is a dance that is called the rhythmical dance.  I'm in Wainui Beach school rhythmical dance team. We have been doing lots of learning about backflip tucks. Our coach is called Jacks. She is a very good teacher because she knows lots of things about gymnastics, beat , line placing, music and flips.  The Gisborne gymnastics club is very big and the floor is like a big mat but it has springs underneath and then soft padding underneath. I'm very excited for the Gisborne gymnastics festival.

Code Cracking

 Code Cracking

Moana cinderkit dose something that is called code cracking. Code cracking is when you go to a class with different people that are not just in your class and you have  a teacher that may not be your teacher.  That teacher teachers you new sounds and words, its just like spelling but you get to do some games sometime. At the start of the year everyone dose a  test and that's how the teachers know what class you're meant to go to because they will  be all the same level.

With my code cracking i'm in room four with koka B, It's very cool because she plays games with us sometimes. At code cracking we need to take our book's and a blue pen. We do lots of things in our book. In the room four we firstly  learn new sounds and then think of as much words as we can that have those two letters inside the word.

After we make up a sentence that has some of those words we thought of, all the sounds we learnt today. Code cracking teachers me lots of new things.  Every morning I go to room three. I like code cracking because I get to be with another and in another class,  because I like doing something different. Code cracking is everyday after morning tea.

There are about Thirty people in my code cracking group. Code cracking is a change for me but it has taught me lots of things, Like new sounds and words. My favourite learning was learning about CVC  words. Code cracking is very fun!

Horu Hopu Tournament

                                                     Horu Hopu  Tournament

Arriving at school                                                                                                                                    Early in the morning everyone in the Hou Hopu team arrived at school. My mum was a helper and was going to take so kids in her car. The Hour Hopu team had to be at school 7.45.  Koka Rozie told us who we were going to travel with to Pathathi. My mum Took Lila, Prince, Koka Rozie (my teacher), Amos       ( my brother) And me. Pathathai is forty mininuts up the coast. It was fun travelling in the same car.

Arriving At Paratahi                                                                                                                                   We arrived at Parathai, the people who were running the tournament  were setting up. A man  came to the tournament with his cooking station, and he was going to make every school stirfry. Our team was playing a game first, vs Manatuki school, on field one.

Before the games                                                                                                                                              We got taught Hour Hopu at school by some people who ran Turanga health. When they came to our school they taught us with atac, center and defender positions.  At the tournament they had center and defender and we were aloud two people to go into other scoring zones.

Games on                                                                                                                                                  Wind blew the poi through the air, at the same time as the ref blew the starting wissel. The game was one. Manatuki caught the ball, and through it to one of them team  member was about to catch the string of the poi but Hunter intercepted and caught the string of the poi. The poi looped backward and then flung in the air. There was a few more pased then the other team got the ball. The other  team had scored three points and there was only ten seconds life Wainui team tried to score but the time was up. We found the first  game very hard because the ref didn't tell us witch way our team was going.  We had a few more games and then we got stir fry. The stir fry was very delicious, with lots of fresh veges and meat.

Getting Better                                                                                                                                          Every game and every half we noticed that out team was getting better and better, by improving on our passes to get it directly to the person and we noticed that  we were looking for the space. It was coming up to be our last game. I was nervous + excited. We sat down under the shady bushy tree before our game.

The Last Game+ Getting Back To School                                                                                              Loudly the buzzer beeped to start the last game. We were on. The Boy from the other team through the poi up in the air, Wainui  caught the string of the poi stroke it backwards before passing. It was a tuf game. Wainui Caught  the ball and the ending person through the poi to other team member in the scoring done. We scored! At the end of the game Wainui  had one with four 1. After we packed up and had then end of day karakia. Finally we Travelled to school. That was a fun experience I had. At the end of the day we had a talk about what our team improved through the games.

Year Five Week

The year five's in my class were having a very fun week with out the year sixes, the year sixes were at Camp Kaitawa, until they came back on Friday.  In the week we made boats and smoothies. Go into the slides and have a look, they are very interesting!  The slides will turn every thirty seconds for you.

Boat Racing

 Boat Racing

Yesterday afternoon our class started making boats, just out of masking tape and butcher paper, in pairs of two.  My buddy was Lila. It was very hard making a boat, just out of two things. First, I folded up some paper and put heaps of masking tape around it. After, we had finished making our boats, we were going to put them in our school pool to see who's boat floats for the longest, and who's moves the fastest in the strong wind. Rolling and and peeling the materials made my hands sore.  We made the sails and the foils.

Lila and I kept rolling, twisting and cutting. It was incredibly exciting.  Our class had a bit more time to finish our boat before we went to test them in the pool.  Things kept breaking off and falling over but we were resilient and determined for our boat to succeed. We did some finishing touches on our boat then we were ready to go.

It was time test the boats in the pool. We went over to the pool, Lila and I held our paper boat and dropped it into the sparkling water. As soon as our boat hit the water it fall over disappointedly. The winner of the boat competition was Millie and Bridie, The had a flat bottom on their  boat to make it stable. Our boat had a V  shape bottom so that's what  made our boat fall over.  Next time Lila and I would do a flat bottom to make it balance and we would make a bigger sail that has not that much masking tape on it so the boat does not tip.

We did this activity because newzealand one the america's cup, and that gave us the idea. The america's up runs every four years. Each team from most countries make a boat in those four years and then practice until the competition is on.

Action day - Harvesting kumara

 Action day -  Harvesting kumara

We were off in the morning, Koka Rozie was writing all of our amazing ideas onto to a big whiteboard. After Koka Rozie  rote all of our interesting ideas onto the whiteboard, our class went outside and started  weeding all of the class gardens. It was hard work weeding and harvesting everything out of the gardens, with the boiling hot sun shining right on us.  It took lots of time, we all had to be resilient and determined to get it done. We went out in the gardens to harvest all the kumara we planted a few months ago and to dig out all the plants that were not meant to be growing in that place. An action day was to do heaps of work around our school, to make our school look nicer.

Diggggg the bell loudly, for a long amount of time it was time,  it was time to go to morning tea.  Codie was coming to teach us some new things about being a 100/100 enviro school. Moana two ( That's my class ) came back in class after morning tea. Codie was ready to talk to us.  Codie comes to enviroschools and talks to them about what they are doing as an enviro school and how they could improve to get better than before. Codie told us lots of interesting things that I did not know before. She showed us lots of pitchers that were very interesting and asked us some questions while we were looking at the pitchers.

Back in the garden we travelled ,harvesting kumara. To me it was very fun. One after another we found kurara. Digging aur hands around the kumara until you could pull the kumara out , without it breaking because you want one whole kumara not pices. Everybody's fingernails were very dirty from digging most of the day. It was very hard working in the hot heat.

At the end of the day we had cleared out the whole garden, there was only soil left. I was proud of my self and my class. It was hard work. Have you ever heard the saying: Do the mahi get the treats, that's how I felt today when we started and did the mahi, then when we finished we got the treats by seeing that its done. Do you like weeding.

Why is growing your own food positive?

- Its fresh

-Healthy

- You know where its been

- Less money

- You only plant the seedling and then the seedling does the work for you.

Lots of others as well. Try listing as many things as you can about why is growing your own food positive?

Inter School Swimming

Inter School Swimming

It was a bright morning, I woke up feeling very nervous but ready to race. Blue sparkling sky reflected on the tall grassy green hills. I hopped in the car after getting ready.  Me, my Mum and my brother Zebedee arrived at school,  we ran to the hall.  I sat down and listened carefully, the teachers told some instrruand we got ready.  Wheels rolling round and round as our car was driving to enter prize pools.

We hopped out of the car when we  arrived.  Sitting on the hard concrete seet feeling nervous was not that nice to me.  I rapped my towel around me while I was waiting for my race to bergen.  Some people hopped in the pool to do a warm up but I didn't want to do it.  Freestyle and back stroke had finished then it was breaststroke up next, I was entered in breaststroke.  I was called up, I lined up and walked out side.

The cool breeze was quite cold but luckily it was a sunny day. The ladies outside put us into our hearts. I felt nervous but also ready to race. Walking back inside seemed way louder than out side. The man saidy ready and bepped a loud buzzed, I dived in the warm sparking pool. I gave it my hunderea present best. I came first and I felt very proud of my self. I don't know why there were only three people in my heat. The time keepers had a little break out side, that was nice to be in the cool fresh air again.

Results came to us and I found out that I was in the breaststroke final. I  felt very happy. The time came so  fast that I was lined up and it was my race after the boys. I was very nervous. Again the man beeped hais buzzer, I was off. At the end  I was very proud of my self. I don't know what I came but it doesn't matter only if you do your best and I did my best. On the way back to school my Mum stopped and got all the people that came in our car and Ice- Cream.  When I went back to my class I was tired but also very proud of my self.

Berry Breeze Smoothie

 Berry Breeze Smoothie

Early in the morning I arrived at school with all my ingredients.  Today at school we were making smoothies in buddies, my buddy was Lila and Zoe.  Our smoothie had lots of ingredients in it, so we all bring some.  I brang Cinnamon, almonds , yoghurt and feijoas.  Our teacher koko Pip gave up a plate to put all of our ingredients on once they are ready.  I  cut the strawberries and scooped the flesh out of the feijoas, pored the yoghurt. It was very fun preparing all the food.  We put the food on the clean plate because our teacher was going to film us make our smoothie, so we wanted it to look nice.

Time to make the Berry Breeze

Slowly and carefully we carried our plate into the filming room. There, we placed it on the table and stuck our recipe behind us with sticky blue tack.  The camera started filming, we were on!

Firstly, we introduced ourselves. Next Lila said what materials we needed to use.  Zoe and I then explained the ingredients we needed. As we read each instruction, we also did it. At first I was nervous but then it was fun. After we did all the steps, we blended it all up. When we blended it all up it was very loud!

Our group tasted the smoothie, it was very thick and tasted like cinnamon. But we liked it. We poured a cup for Koka Nolian and Koka Margo, they are our judges. I started cleaning out the smoothie blenders for other groups, as they were next up.  I found it very interesting watching all the other groups do their videos.

Koka Nolian and Koka Margo came in and judged that afternoon. There were five groups in total. our first judge, Koka Nolian, awarded us in 5th place. With Koka Margo, we came 4th. I loved making the smoothies it was cool.  We did the smoothie day to learn how to make smoothies, to learn camera angles and to do something fun because the year sixes were on camp. Next time we would put way less cinnamon because I think we might have put too much in.

Very Scary Friday

Very Scary Friday

The Earthquake

Waking up at 2.30 in the morning with my bed shaking and rumbling, doors shutting and opening. There was an earthquake.  As soon as I woke up I placed my hands over my head because I thought my bunk was going to fall over. I was worried because my little brother was on the top bunk still asleep.  After the ground stopped shaking, I rushed to my Mum and Dad's room.  I asked my Mum if there was going to be a tsunami, she rushed to her phone and looked at all the websites, the websites said there was a low possibility, this made us all feel very relieved. My family tried to go back to sleep because our house is safe behind heaps of high hills. Even still, I found it hard to go to sleep after that.

Time to wake up

It was morning and the birds were chirping loudly, it was time to wake up and get ready to go to school. The sparkling sunlight shone over the tops of my curtains, it woke me, but I still felt tired after being woken earlier that morning. We hopped on our bikes and rode to school listening to the waves crashing from a distance, the cool breeze blowing my silky long hair as the sun rose higher and higher.  We arrived at school, shoved my bike in the rack and travelled to class.  Loudly the nine o'clock bell rang, we all sat down on the mat and the teachers told us about the earthquake. Our class had an assembly but not with the whole school because of COVID. Half way through koka Rozie's phone beeped, she rushed out of the door  to go talk to koka Nolian. I felt scared and worried.

Sirens echoed across the school. Our whole school had to evacuate to our meeting area at the back off the school and below the big hill.  Koka Nolian told us about a tsunami, she announced that one was not going to come, only up the coast from Tolaga bay had to evaluate. That made me feel better.   She went over our plan if one was going to come. She also said that there was another earthquake out deep sea, this one was stronger than the one last night.  Travelling back to class knowing that the teachers have a plan.

Ending
There was no tsunami the whole day in Gisborne but there was  a little tsunami up the coast. It did not take out any houses, that was good, it just came through the bay like a huge wave. Have you seen a  tsunami before? I felt nervous that whole day.  Luckley school had all the alarms  we needed and a plan if there was going be a tsunami. I told my Mum all the news when I got home, she told me some things as well.  At the end of the day, there were no more tusimsi warnings and all the people from up the coast could go back to their homes . That was probably the scariest Friday of my life.

Off To School 2021

                                   Back to school

My eyes opened in the morning with the sunlight coming through the tops of my curtains.  I was ready for a day of awesome learning at school,   I  got ready and hopped  in the car with my family. As I walked through the school gates I felt nervous + excited to come back to school and see my new class.  Wind was blowing my hair back and forward as I walked down the deck to hang my bag up.  After my mum came in our class's the nine o'clock bell rang very loudly.  Bubbles of hand sanitizer  swirled on my hands as I entered the bright classroom. Our class played some games and later on in the day I knew everyone's name.  After morning tea we started some Art.  Art is one of my favourite subject's . You had to draw twenty, twenty one ( 2021 ). Well the twenty, twenty one art took a lot of time but it was very fun.

Off To Our Pepeha  / Pepeha Week                                                                                                                Off to hamanatua awa

Hats on said the teacher its a hot day.  Boling hot tar melted in the sun as our class and I crossed the road. In straight lines our whole school was off to our awa - Hamanata. We arrived  and sat down on the soft sand.  Sand was flying into one pile as me and my friends were making underground tunnels.   I felt happy.  After that we sat down and had some kai, then travelled back to school in the boiling hot sun. I arrived at school so hot, I scrubbed the sand off my legs and walked into class.

Off to our monga- Monungaroa

Moana syndicate was off to our maunga Maungaroa.  As we walked along the dusty foot path the sun was shining on bright, I could not look up. Travelling all that way moana syndicate finally arrived on Lloyd George Road, down the long drive way we walked to take us to the bottom of Maungaroa. Dusty, slippery, slidey gravel was falling down Maungaroa  as we were trying to hike up the hill.  Boiling hot sun was shining on everyone the whole time but luckily there were some trees when we were travelling up at the start. We kept going round and up the hill, we found a nice flat spot tucked into the side and we stopped for brain break.  Travelling back to school in the hot sun was hard but on the way back we walked on the wet and cold sand.  It felt so nice on my feet. We arrived at school and wiped the sand of my feet. When I got back to my class I was so tired.

Te poho o Rawiri mare

Big buses arrived, Moana syndicate hopped on. The engines stopped as we arrived at  Te poho o Rawiri marae.  There was a powhiri when we arrived.  Inside there was heaps carvings and mats for us to sit on.  Some kids and the teachers got up to give the people at the marae a hongi. Aunty Bubba told us some stories and  taught us a song called Mamma Panda, it's about her grandma making bread for her.  Aunty Bubba told us lots of stories but one of them was about her family with another marae becomes another family and that they call everyone cousins, Aunties, Uncles, brothers and sisters.  When it was time to go  home we hopped on the bus. Arriving at school the bell was nearly going to ring. We cleaned our class.

What is a Pepeha

If you don't know a pepeha is something about you.  Some people have a  Your name, Maunga, Awa, Marae, some people have a tribe- iwi  some people have some other things as well.  Some people use there pepeha a lot and some don't have a pepeha. If you don't have a pepeha thats ok but it would be cool if you could find it out so it any asks you, you could say it.  I'v got a bit of my family in mine as well.

Ending

I loved walking to Hamantua awa, travelling up Maungaroa and going on a bus to  Te poho o Rawiri marae. It was very fun starting back at school. I felt happy to be  back at school even though my holiday was awesome.  Going to all parts of the school pepeha meant that I got to know those places better because  our school finds that very important.  Now that I've told you all those reasons why a pepeha is so important I hope you find your pepeha out.
